veridian: colour schemes

allow for colour coordination
though experimentation of colour I have found that the use
of split complementary colours tend to be the safer option in addition to
generally looking better
the process used for this piece was the use of a traditional
ink drawing that I have scanned and coloured digitally.
to prepare a scanned document to be coloured on photoshop I first
save the document as a jpg, this will allow photoshop to open the document as
the background layer. as the image is a solid layer however it can be very hard
to edit over as it is impossible to effectively select the black lines as they
are due to scanning imperfections and just trying to avoid them will be far too
difficult, to avert this I use a process that is used by the graphic novelist Al
Davison and several other artists that use traditional drawing and digital
colouring: first if the lines are black then the threshold layer edit should be
applied, this converts the image to solid black and white so it is easier to
select, then the layer should be copied onto a new layer preferably on a new document
and above all other layers, from thereon the layer can be set to multiply, this
will make the white complete transparent while keeping the black, allowing for
colour to be added on lower layers without effecting the multiplied layer.
another way to use this is if red lines are used instead of black and are then sharpened
and the hue and saturation is used to reduce the imperfections, as when red
lines are multiplied they become translucent rather than opaque, this can be
used for muted outlines.
C=complementary colour scheme
SC= split-complementary colour scheme
this was my initial plan for this colour scheme as I wanted
green to be a big focus with the character, taking this into consideration I used
inspiration from the transition from summer to autumn with bright oranges and
greens as well as black and grey neutral tones. however I do not believe these
colours match the character and the style of clothing and I think more artificial
colours may work better with the gypsy style clothing.
