colouring process

Image
the layers for this piece consisted of a grey base consisting of the skin/hair and the flowers, this makes it easier to select the image as a whole by selecting the background and inverting the selection using ‘ctrl+shift+I’. after the sections have been drawn and coloured in grey I then use the selections to isolate them and then add colour to those selections, this method allows colours to be altered easily without needing to go through a longer selection process even after shading and additional colour has been added. the colour itself is based on warmer tones for the character and a mix of warm and cold colours for the flowers this was made by layering various skin tones with more reds around the nose, cheeks, chest and ears this process was made easier by studying the style of marguerite sauvage in which gradient is used to create tone and lighting rather than painting edited by opacity.

Joe madureira Most famous for his work within marvel comics Joe designs and creates comic style art with mostly bold and defined colour and line. Personally I chose this artist because of his work within the darksiders series and the influence he has had on the outcome of the games, the darksiders games are dark post-apocalyptic, fantasy open-world games in which the player controls either the horsemen war or death depending on the game. His style within this series consists mostly of what you’d expect from such a series with characters designed out of proportion to demonstrate their inhuman nature and add greater identity to each character with war being designed to be significantly more built than the other characters and death to have a far more ‘feral’ appearance as joe would describe with a more gaunt frame and clawed hands.  Joe began his career as an intern at the age of 16 within marvel comics with his work taking great inspiration from that of Arthur Addams,...

triss: digital to plan traditional art (unfinished)

Image
this project features a scene set in the titansgrave table-top RPG story setting, this is a sci-fi world created by Will Wheaton using the fantasy age core rule book. the piece itself features the elementalist mage landing the final blow on an a dult red dragon. within this I was given free reign over the design of the city and some leeway over the design of the mage in which she is described as a blond elven mage in purple robes carrying a wooden staff.   the first draughts for the plan was laid out in more of a mural style, however after discussion with others it was decided that more of a perspective based action scene was more appropriate.  in response to this discussion I created a second draught and after comparison it was decided to use the second as a reference image. I then separated the image into several sections using a grid that I drew onto a piece of paper to allow the overall sketch to be close to the digital copy as possible as I was unabl...

I have used this program because it is useful for creating shapes and lines, which is very useful for structures and similar subjects the main issue with this program is that often snaps a line to a location where it is not wanted in addition to this it can be hard to create certain angles, generally this is not a very good program but is a simple introduction to 3D modelling. this structure was based on a mix of sci fi and fantasy tavern/bar, I chose this design as it would allow me to experiment with managing space and floor plans as often these styles of buildings are most likely to have the greatest variation in size and shape. after some planning I decided to use the three level plan curling round to create space over the main bar area in somewhat of a helical pattern on the first floor. my initial plan was to place everything over one level on two floor I had planned for the capacity for hold around 150 people at the very maximum but have seating for the majority of...

veridian: colour schemes

allow for colour coordination though experimentation of colour I have found that the use of split complementary colours tend to be the safer option in addition to generally looking better the process used for this piece was the use of a traditional ink drawing that I have scanned and coloured digitally. to prepare a scanned document to be coloured on photoshop I first save the document as a jpg, this will allow photoshop to open the document as the background layer. as the image is a solid layer however it can be very hard to edit over as it is impossible to effectively select the black lines as they are due to scanning imperfections and just trying to avoid them will be far too difficult, to avert this I use a process that is used by the graphic novelist Al Davison and several other artists that use traditional drawing and digital colouring: first if the lines are black then the threshold layer edit should be applied, this converts the image to solid black and wh...

ami: expression and shading

face planning and expressions photoshop is an incredibly useful program for creating and designing characters and concepts, this is because of the flexibility that can be achieved with multiple layers and various functions that can allow easy comparison of different designs and variations. in this case I have used photoshop to study expression within illustration using a predesigned character to view this design with different expressions.   often within illustration facial features are exaggerated to allow expressions to be read easier as well as adding emotional or comical value to an image, depending on the level of exaggeration an expression can vary greatly. considering this some level of exaggeration has been used by making the eyes and mouth larger to better put emotion across. I have also used the ears as an emotional indicator by using the angle to signify emotion, for example pointing them down to indicate negative emotions such as anger, while pointing up to signi...
